FBR chairman declares current tax system dangerous for economy

ISLAMABAD: On Friday, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman Shabbar Zaidi declared the current tax system to be dangerous for the economy in a letter written to Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In the letter, Zaidi wrote that the current tax system is not durable for the next generation and among 220 million population, less than 2 million people pay taxes. He wrote that the current tax system is generating tax less than 20 per cent of the GDP while the tax is being generated through indirect taxes only.

Zaidi further wrote that a big chunk of businessmen refrain from paying taxes and only one per cent people among the entire population are bearing the burden of the whole state. 31 million electricity consumers using commercial connections are outside the taxation scope, he added.
